Stone and birch grotto

This ‘stone circle’ acts as a secluded seating area within this private garden.

Built into a sandy bank, this commissioned retreat was built with local rock and felled silver birch trees from nearby forest management. The stone structure was cemented as it had to be able to retain the pressure of the sand bank. The centre seat/table is an old mill stone. Birch whips were woven between the standing birches to form a shelter. In time the planting of clematis and honeysuckle should cover the entire birch structure.
