Merlin’s tower

At the edge of the woodland, dominating the skyline, stood Merlin’s dark, magical and mysterious tower.

I designed and built the tower which featured prominently in this Chelsea Flower Show garden. The tower was 5 metres tall and built from Scottish blue whin stone. On the oak door I painted a pictorial map of Merlin's realm on slices of elm burr and I designed the mythical dragon hinges which gave it a menacing look.

The inside of the tower was decorated with feathers, herbs and other artefacts that the old wizard might have used, and I painted the walls with magical symbols, giving the small room a magical but cosy feel.
